CAP, WOOL KNIT, M1941 (JEEP CAP)

This wool knit cap was designed for wear underneath the M1 helmet and saw universal use among American troops. The rear of the cap can be pulled down over the ears and the back of the neck or folded up over itself as in the illustration. The cap has a ribbed appearance and the knit is tight, about 1/8" between ribs. It was made in small, medium and large sizes indicated by a small tag sewn into the crown. This tag is the only marking on the cap. The bill is stiffened internally with cardboard. The color ranges from a mustard olive drab to a brownish green.
